Dear Ms XXXXXXX
Let me reassure you there is absolutely no cause for concern.
Normally the coin will get passed out within 24-48hours.
Kindly consider the following points and you will feel much better
1. Coin has passed through Cricopharynx ( Upper part of Oesophagus or windpipe which is narrowest portion of intestinal tract) and also the gastric outlet. So it will definitely pass through rest of the Gastro-intestinal tract.
2. Coin in inert and will not damage the intestinal tract
3. Self defense mechanism of body: The intestinal tract coats the foreign body with food particles and stools, preventing direct contact with the lumen of intestine.
4. Peristaltic activity of intestine will cause expulsion of coin
In my 7 years of clinical practice as a Pediatric Surgeon , I have encountered enumerable cases of foreign body including coin ingestion. In majority of cases the coins are passed out in 24- 48 hours. In few cases it has taken as long as 25 days. I have always counselled the mothers there is absolutely no cause for concern, and none of the children/babies have had any complication due to coin.
Ideally will pass out in 24 to 48 hours. If it does not, it will definitely pass out one day and there is no cause for concern. I also advise to give 2 bananas everyday, it will help in quicker and smooth expulsion. No other medication or laxatives to be given.
Being a Parent myself i can understand your concern.
Do get back to me anytime you need any assistance, will be glad to assist you.
Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy life
