What Does Heavy Bleeding 40 Days After Delivery Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

Today is 42nd day post my c-sec delivery on 27th Feb. since day 1, bleeding(periods) has been normal and not very heavy. but since last 3 days it is like normal periods and slightly on heavier side. Did not experience this much bleeding in first 40 days.

Is it normal to experience bleeding even after 40 days?
what could be the reason for heavier bleeding? is it normal?
thanks!

Brief Answer:
normal to have periods after 42 days

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs. XXXXXXX thanks for trusting health care magic.
Yes it is normal to have periods after 42 days of delivery and first periods can have very light or slightly heavy flow.
But in case you are continuously bleeding since delivery them you will have see your doctor as soon as possible and might also need ultrasound for proper evaluation.
So let me know the pattern of bleeding since your delivery (whether it stopped after few and has started back now or you have been bleeding off and on since then)
Waiting for your response

Thanks doctor for your reply. i hav been bleeding continuously. there were few days on and off when it would just be a light spot but otherwise it has been continuous. It never stopped completely for more than 2 days. Bleeding started with increased flow since last 3 days. Before the heavy flow began, I was already bleeding.

Brief Answer:
gynecologist check up and ultrasound

Detailed Answer:
This is not a good sign and you need to visit your doctor immediately and get yourself examined as well as get a transvaginal ultrasound.
Most probably there is some mild grade infection or there are some retained products of conception.
In either case you will need antibiotics and blood clotting drugs so as to stop the bleeding.
Also keep feeding your baby nicely which will release good hormones from your body to help the body expel products and infection from uterus by making it contract and retract properly.
All the best.
In case you need any advice after meeting your dictor , I will be glad to help.
