What Does High Heart Rate And Abnormal WBC Count Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: I have just left the ER and received a diagnosis of SVT. 3 to 5 times a year my heart rate will rise to 200 bpms and usually holding my breath and clenching my body will reset my heart rate. I went to ER tonight because i was sweating and my heart rate was 200 bpms and wouldn't reset to normal. My ECG caught the abnormal high heart rate and I was referred to a cardiologist. They did blood work at the hospital and said my heart enzyme test was normal. The only thing abnormal from my blood work was my WBC count is 14.3? I am a little scared because I don't have a fever and have not been sick so what can be causing the high WBC? Can the tachardyia or stress itself have caused a skew in this number? Is this concerning? all other counts normal in CBC. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
CBC + formula

Detailed Answer:
Helo Ms/Mrs. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I carefully read your question and understood your main concern.

White blood cell (WBC) count can reflect a lot of things. It may also be indicative of inflammation in the body. Besides that, there are other markers of acute inflammation state, like erythrosedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) level and red blood cell distribuition width (RDW), which you can probably find in the complete blood count report done. I would also suggest you to run a CBC with formula, because WBCs are divided into five groups, and each group can produce high numbers, due to various conditions. For instance, a high polimorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) count is a sign of an acute inflammation due to infection, and their raised number will also reflect on the overall WBC count. However, 14.300 is not a concerning value.

I hope I was of help. If you have more questions, I would be happy to help.
