What Does High Homocysteine Level Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Dec 2015
Question: Hi,
I have recently undergone a blood test for "Homocysteine" and the levels are very high than the recommended levels. According to the test results the reading was 40.1 umoI/L, where as the recommended limit was 3.7 - 13.9.

The doctor advised me to take Folic acid tablets "Folvit".

I would like to understand what is the course to bring back these limits under control.

Please advise.

Brief Answer:
High homocysteine level is a cardiovascular risk

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your query.

Though high homocysteine levels are considered a cardiovascular risk, I dont think we should be overly worried about it.

That said, it is also associated with low vitamin B12, folic acid, pyridoxine levels. Thus a combination of these vitamins can be taken. Abstain from alcohol.

Apart from this, nothing much can be done. In fact healthy lifestyle that healthy diet and exercise will better prevent cardiovascular conditions.

Hope it helps.

Brief Answer:
Many brands

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Before taking these vitamins, it is better to get your blood tested for Vitamin B12 levels. The reason is that you will know if there was any deficiency.

There are many brands. You can take the Tablet folvite (that you already take) alongwith tablet neurobion-plus once a day. OR you can take folite-mb soft gelatin capsule once a day. This combination will help strengthen your nerves and take care of homocysteine as well.

Hope it helps.
