What Does Hot Flashes After Getting Off Birth Control Pill Suggest?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: I got off the birth control pill I was on for 10 years or more at the end of Dec 2014. since then, starting maybe the third week in XXXXXXX I started to feel hot. I thought I was coming down with something , and went to doctors and had blood taken, and all blood work has come back normal. I still wasn't feeling myself after a few weeks, so I decided to see more doctors. My reg doctor told me to see a rheumy because my ana was positive at one point. I went to see a rheumy and she said all my blood came back negative and my ana was negative as well... So I left feeling stumped, not knowing anything but still feeling hot! so since this has all happened, I have had numerous blood tests, all coming back fine, ct scans of my chest, abdomen, sinus, and ultrasound of my abdomen with nothing found. I have also had endoscopy and colonoscopy done, and they said I have ulceration of stomach. Fine, I was put on a pantropazole, and I stopped taking this as I feel I don't need it. so now I am coming here to see what you can do to help. I am still hot, throughout days for months. My eyes get red and my eyes feel hot and my throat also feels this way. I feel like I breath hot air out of my nose, its crazy. but I feel like a stuffy hot head all day long until I am at rest. when I go to sleep, I am fine. I don't feel the stuffiness, I just sleep. sometimes I don't sleep well, and other nights I sleep okay. Not like it used to be before.. I never woke up. I have attached my most recent blood work. I don't know what else to do or think. What can you suggest? I feel feverish but don't have a fever. I never register over 98..6%. I am usually around 97.9 or 98.4%

Brief Answer:
It could be fibromyalgia.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem and going through the reports that you have sent I dont appreciate anything to worry except for your testosterone levels which are elevated , since you are a young female I would suggest you to get yourself screened for PCOS .

You didnt tell the reason why you were on birth control for so long may be that can provide a clue to your present condition.

Although your ANA is negative but still ENA profile should be done considering your symptoms to rule out any other autoimmune etiology . If all these things are ruled out then probably Fibromyalgia can be considered as the diagnosis.

Take care.

I actually had blood work done with a rheumy as well. I have attached that blood work as well. my ana was positive one time and that is why I was sent to rheumy. the rheumy re did blood and hers was negative. please see blood work from rheumy attached. can high test levels cause me to feel hot and tired?
what else do you think? I am quite the worrier and have been worrying for months now.. because I have no doctor telling me anything. I was given Cymbalta but haven't taken it yet as I don't want too yet. I want to try and make myself feel better naturually. anything you can suggest ? I got on birth control when I was 18 and never got off. I guess it was for reasons to not get pregnant. I have an ultrasound XXXXXXX morning to check for pcos. let me know about the other blood works. thanks!

not sure if I mentioned this in my first post, but my eyes bother me a lot. they are very dry, and they burn. I am not sure what this means, and what this is related too. The heat feeling in my body is becoming annoying, and when I feel it, its usually around the same times, around 1pm - 2pm, and then sometimes again around 5pm. again, when I go to bed, I am fine. I don't have any sweats and only sometimes get hot if the room is hot or if I have a lot of blankets on me. what do you suggest? would PCOS cause this?

Brief Answer:
possibility of underlying autoimmune disease is nil

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for reverting back.

Well I have gone through your reports and all of them are negative , so possibility of underlying autoimmune disease is nil . Yes PCOS can give rise to all the issue that you are facing because it can cause a havoc on your hormonal health so please get yourself evaluated for the same .

There is no harm in starting Cymbalta if your physician is saying so , you should start it.

What is nil? Also can I still have fibro? What are thinking this heat feeling I am having is? Basically my body temp went up after getting off pills. Prior I had low temps around 97 and now I'm around 98. Please advise.

Dear Madam,

Nil means the possibility of having autoimmune disease is almost zero .
Yes Fibromyalgia is the most probable diagnosis in your case in my opinion. It can be due to certain hormonal disturbances which can then lead to the symptoms of an estrogen imbalance. That would possibly be causing your flushes and apparent temperature fluctuations.

How certian are you about this? How do you get rid of feeling hot wirh fibro then?

The doctor said my estrogen was low in the beginning but fine in this blood report you have. do you see it as being low? this ALL Happened as soon as I stopped that pill I was on, Reclippsen. Nothing was wrong with me prior. Should I get back on the pill that I was on? I just had my ultrasound done and my transvaginal scan done, and the report is clear. the doctor said nothing alarming, some look like cystic ovaries, but everything else is clear. what is my next step in getting back to normal?

Dear Madam,

Thank you for reverting back.

Well what I see is that a main reason for your hot flushes seems to be due to hormonal disturbances ,since you have fluctuation in your estrogen levels it seems to be the culprit behind your hot flushes . Your doctor has mentioned about some cystic ovaries thats a clue along with your elevated androgen levels that you are having PCOS . See a gynecologist for the same.

I was just at the gynos office. She said nothing to me about having pcos, and she didn't give me any medication. I Don't understand. What is she supposed to give me for this? I am a bit confused. Where do you see these elevated levels in my blood work? What is androgen ? and where is that elevated? How can i get back to normal? These hot flushes seem to last all day.

Dear Madam,

Well androgen is a broad term that I have used for testosterone and its elevated in your test reports , Your gynaecologist needs to deal with the issue , you need to speak to her regarding this . She may start you on birth control pills again for the same .

I am on a new birth control pill but it's less hormones. I started it in March and will continue to take it. Is this what you believe is making me tired and hot ? I have also had a change in eating habits. sometimes I am eating a lot and then other days not as much. I gained about 4 lbs

do you think my shoulder hurting me has anything to do with this? my shoulder blade has been hurting me for a bit on and off

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

I dont think your shoulder pain has anything to do with you being on oral contraceptive . weight gain can be a side effect of using OCPS . And it also causes the estrogen derangements which can give rise to hot flushes .

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

The birth control pills are not simple pills they contain female hormones like estrogen and progesterone , so when the body get hormones from outside the production of these hormones from our own body is stopped , since the body undergoes all these major changes intial side effects are common but they get weaned off with time .
