Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Hematocrit level and MCV in your case are clearly higher than the normal range. This may be due to large RBC (red blood cells). Large RBC may happen due to Vit B12 or folic acid deficiency (very common causes) or may happen due to liver disease, thyroid problems, alcohol intake, and some blood disorders.

You may need some basic tests to identify the proper cause. There are blood tests for Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. Also, TSH, FT4 (for the thyroid), ALT, AST, bilirubin, and albumin level in the blood for the liver function.

As for monocytes, they are in the upper limit, but there is nothing to worry about them. I would appreciate if you would upload the full report so I may have a look at it and have the full picture.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,

My GGT is 104. ALT, AST, Albumin, and bilirubin are all within normal limits. The only numbers out of normal limits are:
GGT 104
HCT 49.1
Monocytes 11.3
MCV 109.0
MPV 14.5

Once again, I do not drink but maybe a few times a year.

Detailed explanations below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

Your GGT is over the normal range. Unfortunately, it is not a specific marker. This means that there are several conditions that may cause it to increase from liver conditions, smoking, pancreas problems, breast tumors to heart problems, lupus, etc.

It is good you are not using alcohol, while alcohol is one of the causes, is not the only one.
If the liver tests come out normal (as you have already explained) then very likely GGT is not high due to liver problems in your case.

I would recommend you to do the checks for megakaryocytes (large red blood cells) as explained above. You will need to check your thyroid function and rule out B12 and folic acid deficiency.

A CBC with a peripheral blood smear (microscopy) is recommended as well.

It is also important to interpret laboratory findings in the clinical context, meaning your symptoms and the reason why you did the tests. So, it would be beneficial if you let us know if you have certain symptoms or the reason why you had the test.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
