What Does My CT Scan Report Indicate?
Question: I was just seen in the ER today for pain
on my lower left side. I have had this sharp shooting intermittent pain for the last 2 weeks. The CT scan showed fluid so they thought I had a ruptured ovarian cyst lower left. I have no other health concerns other than a 3mm kidney stone on right side that only bothers a little like cramps feel. My question is when is this sharp shooting pain on the left going to go away?

A typical ruptured cyst is associated with pain that has a rapid onset and slow gradual resolution. Does this fit with what you are saying? Did they perform an ultrasound? Did they do a pregnancy test?

I am 47 with tube station tied. no ultrasound just ct. the pain gas been the same for 2 weeks. Does that mean it probably ruptured 2 weeks ago and if so how much longer should the pain last?The pain is sharp shooting and intermittently happening throughput the day. Lasts 5-10 seconds then goes away until next episode 10 to 20 minutes later. Nothing seems to set it off. It happens when I am sitting still. I was told at ER that the fluid from ruptured cyst is what is causing the pain. Could this take over 2 weeks to stop hurting?

A ruptured cyst is most often related to the cyst from which an egg was released mid-cycle. This is called the corpus luteum and tends to enlarge during the second half of the cycle and can sometimes break open, releasing contained blood that is irritating. The pain when it ruptures is often rapid and then slowly and progressively improves over days to weeks. I would say that if it was a small amount of fluid, then it would resolved over the course of a couple of weeks.
But sharp shooting intermittent pain that comes and goes sounds more like something related to your bowels or urinary system. This could be any of the following (and not necessarily seen on CT scan)
1. It could still be a ruptured cyst
2. This could be a small kidney stone on the left
3. Constipation or bowel related problems (diverticulitis is usually seen on a CT scan, but not always)
Since the pain has been the SAME for two weeks, I think it would be prudent to further evaluate this. An ultrasound of the pelvis would at least rule out GYN causes of the pain and then you could move forward towards other causes.
