Question: My mum has rectal cancer I don't know what stage. Mum has had 25 sessions of radiotherapy and chemotherapy tablets. Mum has to have a CT Scan on the 17th October to see what response she has had to treatment. After that they think mum will need open surgery and a permanent stoma. Mum has other medical conditions I am worried the treatment has mum might not of responded and I am scared she won't get through the op. Can you please help me with some reassurance. All I have is the letter when mum was first diagnosed I have no results etc.

Brief Answer:
HEllo. Most of the patients respond adequately to treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome. Most of the patient of rectal cancer respond adequately to chemotherapy and radiotherapy and post this treatment surgery has to be done. Surgery will tell about the response to treatment with certainty. In my practice, i have hardly seen any patient not responding to chemoradiotherapy.
Surgery is must and after surgery further chemo will be required.
Thanks and regards and no need to afraid
