What Does My CT Scan Report Indicate?
Question: http://doctor.yyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.com/yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?page=yyyyyyyyyyyyyy=348045
Dr. Sundriyal.
PSA is actually 12 (not 8.87). I had a CT scan last year - everything was OK. also urinalysis test. Prostate enlarged but no problems. I also took Cipro in case of infection. I feel well - I just have a high PSA. Can medication bring it down? I'm 85 years old - should I just ignore it?

Brief Answer:
Hello. At your age it may be ignored
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. So very well, PSA can rise during infection also. i will advise you to have a short course of antibiotics and then repeat psa after a month. If it shows a rising trend then a biopsy of prostate can be planned.
Thanks and regards

Thank you, Dr. Sundriyal. Here is my follow-up question:
My PSA count is 12. A CAT scan showed normal; A urinalysis test showed enlarged prostate but no other problems. I took Cipro to ensure no infection. I feel great.
My question is - why should I have a biopsy taken? If it comes back negative, I still have a 12 PSA and nothing is changed. If it comes back positive - and considering the slow growth of prostate cancer - at my age (85) I will die of old age before prostate cancer can be a factor. So why bother?

Brief Answer:
It all depends on your performance status
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
So, it all depends upon your performance status. Of your physiological reserve is good and you are active like a 70 to 75 year old person, then a biopsy is needed to diagnose and give you some form.of hormonal treatment which is easy to tolerate and give you quality life if biopsy comes positive.
If you are frail and weak, then no need to go for biopsy.
Hope you understand well.
