What Does My CT Scan Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Aug 2015
Question: My mother is 70 and during a CT scan they incidentally
found a 3mm brain aneurysm. The neurologist said it
was a fairly common finding and she just needed to make
an appointment in a year and check it for growth. He said
not to worry and she had no restrictions. We own a produce
farm and I was wondering (even though she has no restrictions)
if it is safe for her to bend to work and to occasionally lift
20 pound boxes of tomatoes. She has done this for years but
if it is risky we need to limit that activity (although she won't
like it...) She is very physically fit and active for her age. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Straining should be avoided.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Considering your mother's age, small aneurysm of 3 mm size should be left for periodic monitoring with neuroimaging. So,your consulting doctor is following the correct approach.

Overstraining should be avoided. So,its better if she avoids such heavy load. She should be on moderate physical activity and a healthy diet, rich in whole grains & fruits/vegetables.Her blood pressure should be monitored to avoid high blood pressure and she should not take any medicines without doctor's prescription.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.

What would be the maximum she should
lift? She sorts and boxes strawberries and
tomatoes that weigh about 10 pounds...is
that also too much. She really enjoys doing
the work so I know she will hate giving it up.
Is bending to pick also a problems? Thanks!

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

There is no absolute cut-off for till what limit should one strain. The idea is that wherever possible,it should be avoided.Still, practically thinking 10 pounds of weight is not too much. Little bending may do no harm, still if possible, should be minimised.

Ok so for my own clarification I have 2 final questions:
1. Is it that the lifting and bending over a long period of
time makes the artery weaker...if so does that means she
is at greater risk of rupture because she has done this
work for so long? Or...is it that the lifting or bending
may cause an acute strain that would rupture the
aneurysm from that one particular event?
2. The neurologist was rather dismissive about the
seriousness of the situation. He said no restrictions
and very, very low risk of rupture. Do you think the
situation is more serious than he indicated?
Thanks, I appreciate your help and I will rate right away.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Answers to your queries:
1)Acute strain is the main concern.
2)3 mm is very small in size and almost no risk of rupture.Restrictions though are not absolutely needed, but its just about taking precautions. No,I don't think that situation is more serious than what he indicated. He had a correct approach.
