What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?
My concern is that it is now almost 30 days since this happened and I am noticing some muscle twitching, in particular, his right eyelid closed for a second involuntarily and then opened again. This was clearly not a regular blink and it was only one eye. I am very worried. What could this be? We have a neurologist appt on the 30th.
An EEG may tell whether there is any abnormal electrical activity of brain.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.
If your son would have presented to me as an outpatient, I would have suggested an Electroencephalogram (EEG) to be repeated now, so as to see the electrical activity of the brain, whether there are any abnormal or epileptogenic electrical discharges correlating with these eyelid muscle twitches. However, in the background history of seizures, most important differential for these would be partial or focal seizures.
Another point to stress here is regarding the asymptomatic status of arachnoid cyst. Arachnoid cyst, if small is is usually asymptomatic, but can be symptomatic too, if large. It can be a cause of seizures. It will be better if you can upload a MRI image showing arachnoid cyst.
Other differentials can be-
1)Benign fasciculations - These can affect eyelid muscles also.
2)Secondary hemifacial spasm-rare possibility.
Please discuss with your neurologist about these possibilities. Please make a video of those eye blinks as it may help him to actually clinch the diagnosis. If you can please upload it here, let me have a look at it. Antiepileptic therapy should be started in light of this history and arachnoid cyst's symptomatic vs asymptomatic status should be clarified.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have some follow-up questions, I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review. Your rating will be of help to me.
