What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Dec 2015
Question: I was recently given an MRI. After reading the report I have questions about the results. It says I have concentric areas of sclerosis with associated fat in the clivus. Does the area of Sclerosis mean I have MS? I also have questionable post contrast enhancement in the areas of fat already t1 hyperintense on pre contrast images. I also have multiple bilateral enhancing parotid lymph nodes. Can anyone tell me what all this means in layman's terms?

Brief Answer:
Findings suggest condition other than MS

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1.The findings suggest increased bone mineralization with surrounding fat density in a small bone in the midline behind the space between the eyes. This is not multiple sclerosis. This can be from fat containing lesions within the clivus. The fat areas show doubtful blood flow within and probably a benign condition.

2. Bilateral parotid lymph node enlargement can be from infection, inflammation or conditions where the immune system is activated.

3. Your condition requires detailed evaluation with clinical and pathological investigations. The cause of lymph node enlargement requires confirmation.

Hope your query is answered.

Thank you. If I may ask what kind of conditions would cause it to be enlarged?

Brief Answer:
It can be one of the following

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The parotid lymphnode enlargement can be a viral infection or a chronic infection like tuberculosis or an autoimmune condition like sarcoidosis or rarely neoplastic. It is difficult to have one probable diagnosis on MRI scan and pathological evaluation is needed.
