Question: I had an MRI of my back and this is the exact wording on the report. what does it mean and do I need to get it checked out. "partially imaged bilateral renal pelviectasis or hydronephrosis versus bilateral extrarenal pelvises. also 11 mm cyst in the upper pole of the left kidney."

Brief Answer:
Possibilities are mentioned below, suggested review ultrasound scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The report shows that the collecting system of the kidneys on both sides appear full when seen on the MRI scan. This can be due to the following reasons
(i) It can be that the bladder was completely full at the of MRI scan since it is involving both the sides
(ii) The kidney pelvicalyceal system is appearing full by itself (extrarenal pelvis) and is an extension of normal appearance.
(iii) Rarely an infection of urinary system and kidneys (recent or old) can cause such a finding but this is likely only if the patient has symptoms like pain in the region of kidney and problems like burning urination or discoloration of urine or any kidney infections in the past.
(iv) Stones in lower ureter can also cause fullness of pelvicalyceal system but having a bilateral involvement makes this less likely
(v) Any mass in abdomen including retroperitoneal area causing pressure on ureters but since no such mass is documented therefore this is unlikely to be the cause.

2. The 11 mm cyst in upper pole of left kidney is most likely a benign cyst and harmless in nature. Such a cyst is expected at your age.

3. In conclusion, please get a review ultrasound scan done with a focus on the kidneys. The scan should be done on full bladder and after voiding urine. This will help to come to a probable cause for the MRI appearance of bilateral fullness of the kidney collecting system.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
