What Does My Abdominal Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?
Question: In my ultrasound abdomen test, Impression seen is "Features are suggestive of horse shoe kidney with fusion at lower end". What does that means, is it a problem???

Horse shoe kidney is a developmental problem in fetuses. Here the lower poles of kidneys fuse together in midline in front of aorta, to give a horse shoe shape to kidneys.
Mostly the condition runs asymptomatic. Only with increased risk of kidney infections/ kidney stones....need to be taken care of by by giving more attention to prevention of these conditions by meticulous life style like-
-Drinking sufficient water (10 to 12 glasses/day) &care to clear bladder periodically so that all the contents of kidneys are passed out completely.
-Avoid retention of urine so that there is no retained urine . which helps infection/stone formation.
-Strict genital &sexual hygiene .. to prevent infection. Avoid sex with infected person by STD.
-Avoid excessive stress to lumber spine.. where the kidney lies.
-Have a periodic urine check up &consultation of a kidney specialist to exclude or early diagnose possible kidney problem followed by early specific treatment as per need.
Thus a normal healthy life style with keen vigilance for kidney problem regular consultation of Nephrologist would offer a comfortable life inspite of having horse shoe kidney.
