What Does My Blood Result Indicate?
Question: My 16yr old daughter has blood results as follows. Does this look like infection? She had a chest infection 5 weeks ago and had anti b's. It cleared up in 2 days. But CBC still not within range in areas.
1st bloods - (outside range only)
WBC: 17.7x10e9/L (4.0-11.00)
Neutrophils 14.5x10e9/L (2.0-7.5)
Blood film - red cells show increased rouleaux formation. Neutropilia present.
Serum iron: 5umol/L (10-30)
Ferritin: 92ug/L (20-200) within range
Transferrin: 3.5g/L (2.0-3.5) within range
Transferrin saturation: 6% (16-50)
Repeat tests one month after antibiotics -
Platelets: 427x10e9/L (150-420)
WBC 15.0x10e9/L (4.0-11.0)
Neutrophils: 11.5x10e9/L (2.0-7.5)
Monocytes: 1.1x10e9/L (0.2-1.0)
Eosinophils have risen from 1st test from 0.3x10e9/L to 0.5x10e9/L (<0.51)
Blood film same as above re rouleaux and neutrophilia.
Iron pills given for a month prior to this test -
Serum iron: 18umol/L (10-30)
Ferritin: 73ug/L (20-200)
Transferrin: 4.1g/L (2.0-3.5)
Transferrin Saturation: 18% (16-50)
Doctor wants another CBC in 3 weeks. My daughter has lightheadedness, headaches, on and off tummy pains, foot pain, once shoulder pain. No weight loss or loss of appetite. No night sweats but hot flushes during the day. Any ideas greatly appreciated. She also has Coeliac disease and thrush/heavy candida at present from the antibiotics.
Many Thanks

Brief Answer:
Counts will take time to normalise
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
The repeat CBC shows a slight decrease in WBC and neutrophils.
I dont think there is any active bacterial infection.
THE CANDIDA infection could cause increase in counts.
I suggest you should treat her for candida infection.
Usually clotrimazole mouth paint or fluconazole tablets are given for thrush.
Repeat CBC after treating candida
Iron status is improving, dont worry.
Wishing your child good health
