Question: My mom has iron level of 23 ug/ml and Vitamin B12 count of 126.9pg/ml.
Hemoglobin count - 9.3 g/dL
Hematocrit - 30.9%
Mean Corpuscular vol -78.8fL
Mean Corpuscular HGB - 23.7 pg
Mean Corpuscular Hemogloblin Concentration - 30.1 g/dL

She is a vegetarian. Physician has asked her to take iron supplement tablet Orofer for 2 months (1 tab per day) and Renerve Plus injection twice a week for a month, followed by once a month for 4 months and then once a six months for 2 years (in total 16 injections). Does it make sure her iron and B12 level increases? Also, can you suggest vegetarian diet and do we need to test after few months? Do we need to go for Vitamin D3 test.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, welcome to HCM and thanks for choosing us.

I share your concern about your mother's health. Your mother is suffering from anemia due to iron and vitamin deficiency. This is most common cause too. However haemoglobin levels of 9.3 is not alarmingly low. It can be corrected by supplements easily.

If your mother is able to continue the medicines for 2 months, she will certainly find improvement in haemoglobin levels. Once haemoglobin reaches 12.5 , you need to just maintain the nutrition.

Following are the food items (vegetarian) which are rich in nutrients required for healthy blood values
Coarse cereals like ragi, pearl millet, maize
Jaggery (sugar cane), dates
Green vegetables like spinach
Fruits like pomegranate, apple
Milk and milk products

If one takes adequate quantity of all these food items regularly, chances of being anemic are very less.

Vitamin d 3 levels are also important, you should get it checked too.

I hope my reply will help you. Please contact us for more information and follow up queries. I wish good health to your mother and whole family.
