What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Aug 2015
Question: CBC came back with all numbers "normal" except MCV at 102 and mono% at 13.6. Dr. asked about alcohol use and when I explained I only had a few glasses of wine per week, seed concern that these numbers could point to leukemia. Is this correct?

Brief Answer:
It is one of the possibilities, but only once all others have been ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. As mentioned you do not consume alcohol too often, and as you have not reported anaemia either the options we should be looking into are:

+Thyroid abnormalities
+Liver abnormalities
+Bone marrow abnormalities (which can also be related to leukaemia)
+Myelodysplasia
+Certain medications
+Pregnancy
and a few other causes.

But please note that leukaemia is not the only cause; but this is based on the information you have provided me with. If your thyroid, and all other parameters have been checked then your bone marrow will have to be elaborately checked and leukaemia will have to be ruled out/confirmed.

Please also feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you for the response. Thyroid and liver fcn are normal. I have been on testosterone supplement for low testosterone for 4 years. Diagnosis of herpes simplex 1 virus 4 mo ago with 3 active outbreaks. Will either of these impact those numbers. Dr stated that numbers are not far outside of normal parameters so I am confused

Brief Answer:
Medications can cause mild fluctuations, need to confirm that

Detailed Answer:
Hi sir.

Medications like the ones you are on can cause fluctuations in these parameters, so if at all possible, try to discontinue these medications for a while and observe to see if your MCV changes into a more normal level.

If yes, then great; if not, then we need to consider going about more intensive investigation to find the cause.

Best wishes.
