What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?
Question: What does it mean if my blood test came back AST 48 and ALT 54?
Brief Answer:
Tests results are within normal limits. Very unlikely to have liver issues
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,
These blood tests are designed to measure the functioning of your liver. They are transaminases and when raised give an indication that the liver might be damaged.
In your case, they are within normal limits. It is very unlikely that you have any liver dysfunction.
Thanks and kind regards as I wish you the best of health.

My doctor told me it was the beginning of cirrhosis. What does this mean? What is your numbers for a safe range?
Brief Answer:
Your readings are within acceptable and safe ranges, liver hygiene needed.
Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks for the follow up question.
For AST, the normal range is between 1 and 40, and for ALT between 7 and 56 generally. However, this only becomes a serious concern is seriously affected liver (damage) only when these readings are as high as twice the normal range (that is 80 for AST and over 100 for ALT). It i also important to get follow up from doctor is with subsequent tests, the test values are seen to be increasing.
Cirrhosis is a chronic liver condition where the liver kind of becomes hardened. However, other blood tests and exams like CT scans and abdominal ultrasounds are needed to make such a diagnosis. AST and ALT measures simply help the clinician to monitor the degree to which the liver ensures its metabolic role in the body. And in your case, I think the liver should be playing it role as desired.
In case your doctor talked of beginning of liver cirrhosis, you will need to practice some liver hygeine, including not taking any medication without the consent of your doctor, avoiding alcohol as much as possible and getting regular medical follow.
Thanks and kind regards. Please, feel free asking any further questions in case of need. I will be more than glad to contribute.
