What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Apr 2017
Question: Hello! I'm attaching a page from my husband's recent blood work and had a question regarding his PSA reading. He just turned 50 years of age. As you'll see, while his total PSA is within normal range, his free PSA was low.

Since his total PSA was within normal range, is here any reason to be worried about he low free PSA?

Thank you so much for your help!

Brief Answer:
Cancer unlikely. Biopsy not needed. Repeat in 6 months.

Detailed Answer:
Good day and thank you for being with healthcare magic!

There is no studies to show the usefulness of free PSA in patients with normal range Total PSA. Usually the free PSA test is used in the gray zone PSA in between 4-10 to avoid unnecessary biopsies.

In your case although the free PSA is low , the normal value or percent threshold has not been established for PSA levels less than 4.

That being said in my opinion your husband doesn't need a prostate biopsy. I would suggest to monitor PSA after 6 months to check for the trend or if the total PSA would rise.

I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily and please consider a 5 Star rating for me.
