What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Jun 2017
Question: My husband just had blood work done at Center for Men. His Protein level is low although he is a weight lifter and has approximately 200 proteins per day. They also said his prostrate number indicated it was slightly enlarged. We made an appointment for a doctor in a week but wondered if we should be alarmed??

Brief Answer:
No reason to be alarmed. Just follow it up to rule out important diagnoses.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

The protein levels can be a bit low in a man who is using a lot of proteins because he is a weight lifter.
It is not a problem, unless he is eliminating these proteins in the urine (so there is high levels of proteins in the urine analyse) or if he has symptoms like swelling in his legs or other parts of the body.

About your other question- most man in your husbands age has an enlarged prostate. It is not a reason to be alarmed if he doesn't have urinary symptoms like difficulty in urination, frequent urination during night, ect. The most important thing to rule out is a prostate cancer, which is not common and also has a long anf good survival. The doctor with who you have scheduled an appointment will do a PSA (test which will be determine in the blood) and a rectal ultrasound or just a rectal exam, and rule that diagnoses out.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.

Dr. Papaqako
