What Does My Complete Blood Count Report Indicate?
Question: Hi there, I recently had a CBC done. Everything was normal except for my MPV, which was 9.7. In the report, it said that the normal range for MPV is 6.0-9.5 fL. I read online on several websites that the normal range is 7.5-11, so I'm confused about what's considered normal. Also, I know that my MPV is only a little elevated based on the 6.0-9.5 range, but I'm concerned because my mother died of CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) about six months ago at age 66. I'm wondering if this slightly elevated MPV is an early indication of a blood or bone marrow disease, like leukemia, and if so, if there is anything I can do about it. Regarding your complete blood count this reading of 9.5 does not indicate any active disease process including chronic lymphocytic leukemia. There is a certain degree of variation in laboratory testing and I am sure if you had your blood count checked again the MPV in the next laboratory check might be different then the mostrecent reading.
Sometimes we can see elevation of MPV when platelet count is low from from an immune process which causes consumption of platelets. In your case with the normal account, normal hemoglobin and normal platelet count this reading does not have significance and does not indicate any ongoing disease process.

Thanks for your response, Dr. XXXXXXX But actually, my MPV was 9.7, not 9.5. So it was a little over what the lab considers normal for MPV (6.0-9.5). Does that make a difference in your assessment? Thanks!
