What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: I am seeking an additional opinion. These are the results from my blood tests. What do these numbers mean? What are some medical and non medical options? Are these numbers permanent or are the numbers reversible (achieve normal numbers) without medications? Both my parents have diabetes in their old age. Is it guaranteed (unavoidable) that I will suffer the same fate? Is it possible to have full life without diabetes?

Height 5'11"
Weight 245
Triglycerides 292
Cholesterol 226
Ldl 134
Hdl 34
Glucose 101
A1c 6.2

Brief Answer:
Prediabetes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.

* Considering your Height and weight (245 pound) your Body mass index (BMI) is >35 which is Class II obesity.

* In lipid profile-
- Total cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol & Tryglycerides are more than normal.
- HDL cholesterol is below normal.
- Over all it is abnormal Lipid profile with atherogenic risk (Risk for blood vessel narrowing due to cholesterol deposition.

* Glucose level of 101 considering it as fasting denotes Prediabetes (Impaired Fasting Glucose, IFG) status.

* HbA1c of 6.2 (5.7 to 6.4) denote Prediabetes status.

Over all you fulfill the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria of Metabolic syndrome.

* Considering your Class II obesity you have opportunity to revert all these readings even below normal with aggressive life style modification.
- Weight reduction.
- Diet modification (Weight reducing, low calories, low fat diet) 1200 kcal diet with nutritional supplement under the observation of Endocrinologist//Diabetologist and nutrition specialist.
- Regular exercise according to your effort tolerance after evaluating cardiac status.

* Considering your family history and current Prediabetes & Metabolic syndrome status you are really at high risk (Almost 100% chance) of developing diabetes.

* But with your aggressive life style modification under supervision of endocrinologist/Diabetologist, nutritional specialist you can post pone the onset diabetes or possibly live without diabetes for whole life provided you have to follow life style measures for life time.

Hope I have answered your question.
