What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate?

Dr. Brown I had pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound today. Good news in that the cyst is Simple and all other organs looked good. The tech who was very good at showing me things suggested I ask the doctor about treating the cyst with hormones to reduce it.
Assuming the Blood test shows no cancerous markers, would hormones be an option? Assuming the answer is no, is the ovary removed with the cyst?
I see the GYB/OB Tuesday, but value your opinion.
Thanks very much
The tech was incorrect in her recommendation
Detailed Answer:
Hello again!
I'm glad to hear that it looks like a simple cyst.
However, it's actually a pet peeve of mine when ultrasound technicians start talking about gynecologic treatments, because unfortunately they usually are misinformed.
It is true that birth control pills can reduce the formation of ovarian cysts, but the only type of cyst that responds this way are cysts related to ovulation in reproductive age women.
The risks of having ovarian cysts if they are known to be benign are only related to their size. If your cyst is bigger than 5 cm in size, it can flip around inside you and twist around your Fallopian tube and cut off its own blood supply, which is called a torsion. This can cause severe pain and internal bleeding when the cyst ruptures.
So if the cyst is bigger than 5 cm it really is safest to remove it. It will never go away by itself and can only grow bigger with time.
Your doctor may recommend removing both your ovaries if you have surgery because they have really no hormonal function at your age and it will prevent you from ever having to worry about ovarian cancer.
So I do think that removing the cyst is still the best thing to do... if it is done laparoscopically your recovery takes about 2 weeks... and you usually go home the same day.
Let me know what you think, and I'm glad they think it's a simple cyst
Take care, Dr. B
