What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate?
The derranged iron - due to iron supplements or chronic disease.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
I am Dr Shailja Puri, Pathologist with hematology as one of my speciality.
After reviewing your blood report, it is evident that the serum iron is within range but it is on higher side.
The total iron binding capacity (TIBC) is reduced and transferrin saturation is increased.
Serum ferritin is within range.
In order to understand your lab findings you need to understand iron dynamics in body.
Ferritin is storage form of iron.
Whenever there is iron deficiency, serum iron, ferritin are decreased, TIBC is increased and transferrin saturation is decreased.
Iron overload is characterized by increase in serum iron, ferritin, decrease in TIBC and increase in transferrin saturation.
Serum iron towards higher side, reduced TIBC and increased transferrin saturation suggest increased iron in body. A normal ferritin rules out iron overload.
Are you taking iron supplements?
In case you are taking iron supplements, its time to stop it.
Another cause of these findings is chronic disease.
Chronic diseases lead to increase in ferritin, increase in iron, low TIBC and high transferrin saturation. The ferritin is normal in your case but that can be possible in chronic diseases.
If there is no such history, please share your previous history so that the cause of the deranged parameters can be found out and hence treated.
All other blood results - hemoglobin, WBC and platelets are within normal range.
A slight decrease in hematocrit and increase in neutrophils does not suggest any disease state.
The thyroid profile is normal.
The biochemistry parameters are within range.
The lupus screening and RA factor are negative which is normal.
If you have more concerns, I will be glad to answer.
Thanks and take care
