What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate?
Your Value Standard Range
Thyroglobulin <0.2 ng/mL <=55.0 ng/mL
Thyroglobulin concentrations may be falsely lowered when the thyroglobulin antibody is present. Recommend ordering Thyroglobulin by LC-MS/MS.
Thyroglobulin Antibody <20.0 IU/mL <=40.0 IU/mL
Can anyone explain what this really means - I'm a thyroid cancer patient . Had thyroid removed . Never had therapy .
Thyroid
Detailed Answer:
I follow your question.
After thyroid removal for cancer, patients are typically monitored for recurrence of the thyroid cancer in various ways. One of them is periodically checking the blood for Thyroglobulin(TG) concentrations. Low or even undetectable levels are desirable.
As your laboratory report correctly states, there is a chance of the TG levels appearing falsely low (when in reality they may be abnormally high) if anti TG antibodies are present in that individual.
For this reason, testing the blood for anti TG is often performed simultaneously with TSH and TG levels.
As your anti TG is normal, it is very likely that your undetectable TG levels are reliable and correctly reported.
You must follow up regularly with an endocrinologist experienced in the care for thyroid cancer patients on a regular basis, for thorough physical examinations
Follow up
Detailed Answer:
It is most likely that you have no recurrence. However, TG is only one of the several ways to check for recurrence. Another example is physical examination and Ultrasound of the neck. Your endocrinologist will guide you as to which tests need to be performed and when, after a detailed in-person evaluation at each visit
