What Does My Thyroid Function Test Report Indicate?
Question: Hello. I had a thyroid function test as part of an annual exam. My TSH was 10 (normal highest range of around 3.6) and Free T4 was .65 (normal low range was .70). My doctor thought I had an underactive thyroid. I took a second test two weeks later which showed TSH at 5 and Free T4 at .72. Now my third test, six weeks after the last one, shows TSH of .020 and Free T4 of 1.74. Now my doctor thinks I have an overactive thyroid and has ordered an ultrasound. What conditions do these symptoms indicate?
Brief Answer:
It could be thyroiditis
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.
This type of fluctuations in thyroid function is seen in a condition called thyroiditis. Here your thyroid gets an inflammation just like tonsillitis.
You need to wait for few weeks for the inflammation to settle, before deciding on over active or under active thyroid. A scan called technetium thyroid uptake scan is useful in this situation. If this is not available in your place repeating the thyroid function every month will be an option.
Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you
