Question: I really need a second opinion on the gender of my child. I'm in a small town with no other way of a second opinion. my husband is scaring me and saying he is wrong and I've already started buying items for our baby. Can someone please help me here? I sent the ultrasound picture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

It is really impossible to tell from this ultrasound image what gender the baby is. I imagine you will be getting another ultrasound along the course of your pregnancy and perhaps that will tell you.

It is often not possible to tell the gender of a child in utero. The baby's leg may be pulled up or the position of the baby just doesn't allow to see the gender in many situations. If a penis is notably visible, then you know you have a boy, but not seeing a penis does not mean it isn't a boy! It just means it isn't possible to see it during the ultrasound.

I had a patient who had a little boy (a toddler) and was pregnant with her second child. She desperately wanted a girl. She did have an ultrasound but no sex was noted on the report because nothing was visible - perhaps due to the position of the baby or other factors. The mom-to-be was convinced and overjoyed that she was going to have a girl and embroidered a girl's name on a diaper bag and other items and bought pink dresses. When the baby was born it was a boy, and the mom was very upset initially, thinking the ultrasound radiologist hadn't been honest. So I'm going to encourage you to be flexible and not worry about the gender. For most of human history, we didn't know what gender our babies were going to be (and often we still don't, even with ultrasounds).

I hope this information help shed light on your dilemma.
