What Does My Ultrasound Scan Test Report Indicate?

Hydroureteronephrosis should be treated in 15 days depending on cause
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. A severe infection of urinary system and kidneys (recent or old) can cause such a finding and this is likely if you had symptoms like pain in the region of kidney and problems like burning urination or discoloration of urine or kidney and urinary bladder infections confirmed by doing urine culture.
2. Stones in kidney and lower ureter can also cause hydroureteronephrosis and this needs confirmation by doing ultrasound scan of CT scan of abdomen and pelvis. Stones usually cause severe pain in kidney area and radiates to the flanks.
3. Any mass in abdomen or pelvis including a significantly enlarged prostate might be causing pressure at the opening of ureters in the urinary bladder. Prostate enlargement can happen at your age of 71 years and if present would have been seen on the ultrasound scan.
4. Should you have an ongoing infection then it is required to do culture and sensitivity and take antibiotics as prescribed.
5. For stones, the treatment varies with the size, number and location of stones. It is by medicines or minimally invasive surgery.
6. In case of a large mass in lower abdomen and pelvis or enlarged prostate, the management is by surgery.
7. Regarding seriousness, any moderate to severe hydroureteronephrosis for more than 15 days might cause irreversible damage to the kidneys. Therefore it is important to treat hydroureteronephrosis quickly and prevent kidney damage due to long standing urinary obstruction.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
