Posted on Fri, 5 May 2017
Question: Hello. What does a urine culture mean when it says "No significant growth, organisms recovered in low numbers",? Is that an Infection? Everything else in the urine test shows normal results: negative urinalysis chemical and normal ranges for urinalysis microscopic.

Brief Answer:
Nosignificant growth of organisms rules out infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

During process of urine culture few drops of urine is placed in a petry disc containing culture media which is favorable to growth of organisms (Bacteria) if present in a material like urine ,stool .pus discharge etc .It takes 48 hours for bacteria to grow and to form colonies in this medium. Count of 1lac bacterial colonies is considered as a positive evidence of infection .These bacteria are subjected to various antibiotics and the eradication of these colonies suggests that the organisms ( Bacteria) are sensitive to that particular antibiotic .

No significant growth denotes either very mild infection or well treated infection with appropriate antibiotics.

In view of no significant growth and normal urine analysis does suggest that you have no UTI and need not worry at all .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

The results were reported only 24 hours after the test at the lab. Does this mean the results are invalid? Maybe after 48 hours the bacteria would grow to a significant bacteria ?

I am a little concerned because I have been having symptoms of urethritis. Did a urine test a week ago, all normal. No growth in culture. This time, however, result isn't as definitive since it shows various organisms in low numbers with NO SIGNIFICANT GROWTH. Haven't been taking antibiotics. Should I be taking antibitoics? Or should I do urine test again?

Is your best guess a mild infection given the urine culture findings? Or NO infection, given normal urine analysis?

I can not comment or opine about genuineness of report of urine culture issued to you .

Repeat urine culture in different lab and take antibiotics as per sensitivity report if infection is positive .
