Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query.
I think I would be able to help you.
The symptoms and the pictures are quite suggestive of a possible allergic reaction.
In the jungle, anything could have caused a reaction from an unnoticed insect bite to spider webs to some tree bark allergen.
mostly, a simple anti allergy medicine may help you. Still , I would suggest meeting them at the ER once to make sure that there are no toxic systemic effects in case of a possible bite.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal

The moment it happened I felt blinding pain--much more than I would expect from an insect bite or sting. I've lived in the midatlantic region of the US for quite some time and have never had this experience before. It is still painful (occasional throbbing).

Detailed Answer:
Allergic and toxic bites can be a lot more painful.
As I said I would suggest meeting them at the ER once to make sure that there are no toxic systemic effects in case of a possible bite.
And insect bite is just 1 part of the spectrum, not the only possibility.
Best of luck.
