What Does Pelvic Ultrasound Showing Cysts In Myometrium Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 May 2014
Question: I am 28 years old, female. 2 prior cesareans. had a tubal ligation at 25 due to being a high risk pregnancy (risk of rupture) along with an endo ablation.
I recently was at the OB and had a pelvic ultra sound due to pelvic pain and risk of hernia. They found a cystic area in the myometrium measuring 6*8*7 MM. The doctor didn't even tell me about it, I had to question her because I seen my medical paper from that day. She didn't answer my questions and wasn't listening to anything I was saying. Should I be concerned about the cystic area that they found? I am concerned because of my family history with female cancer...
The OB also told me it is a high possibility of me having endometriosous

Brief Answer:
A gynecologist's consultation will help to cure.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for the query.
You said you have family history of female cancers. To know about a cystic swelling in uterine musculature, in that background, must have caused a great tension. I understand your concern.
* A small cystic lesion (6*8*7) was found in your uterine musculature-I feel there are only two possibilities for the cause-
- Endometriosis- as suggested by your doctor
-Cystic degeneration of uterine leomyoma (fibroid) the degenerated fibroid also needs expert's advice & removal.
* The differentiation will be after CT scan/MRI.or laparoscopic biopsy.
*Even if it is endometriosis think yourself to be lucky, for
- Endometriosis in myometrium can not cause adhesions so fast, which make the symptoms graver.
- It is diagnosed early, so treatment would be easier.
- Please understand there is no suggestion of cancer.

* Management - It has to be conservative in case of patient who does not have issue. Here also you are safe, you already have two issues.
- Can be controlled by hormones. (Oral/patch/injections)- Along with Symptom relief by NSAIDs.
- Surgical treatment is removal of adhesions/hysterectomy (as you don't need issues any more I feel hysterectomy can be preferred).
* Finally you understand there is definite cure for the cystic lesion you have in your uterus.
I would advice to consult a Gynecologist for management. He should decide line of treatment after examination & investigations.
I hope the answer was informative & useful to you. Any further query is welcome.
Thanks.

Thank You for the answer. I will say it did put me at ease. I feel that it is endometriosis, due to the OB I seen saying that too (but she wasn't referring to the cystic area she had seen). I also have a family history or endometriosis so I a wouldn't be surprised if in fact that was the case, along with all the surgeries I have went through concerning my "female parts". Also my sister suffers from fibroid's herself. I do not think I am ready for a hysterectomy, due to my age, and still "attached" to my parts!
I am relived to see I don't need to be alarmed with my diagnosis, and that where it is located is harder for it to grow.

Thank you so much for your input, you put my mind at ease

Brief Answer:
Get endometriosis confirmed/treated by an expert.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for the prompt answer.
I am happy that you were eased with the information given. And a composed psychology supports health. A family history of cancer demands an 'on guard attitude', which you have. I do appreciate it.
I would suggest a regular gynecological check up along with pap smear/mammography on periodic basis. 3 yearly till you are 40 & yearly after that. Self breast examination once in a month also helps to detect slightest change in breast.
Now about Endometriosis. Though you are free from tension now, I hope/advice to avoid carelessness.
Please consult an expert Gynecologist, get yourself examined & investigated to confirm the diagnosis of endometriosis & get rid of the problem by whatever means your consultant feels right for you.
Please don't be scared, the type of endometriosis you have can be cured by hormones & NSAIDs for pain management.
Wish you all the best & I will be happy to help you in case you have follow up further query.
Thank you once more, with regards...
