Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

The fact that the pain is extended all the way down to the foot makes the possibility of a nerve origin likely (as opposed to a hip joint issue).
A nerve can be compressed anywhere along its course but given the presence of back pain the most likely site in your case (and in general) would be the nerve root as it exits the spine. Such an issue may be due to disc herniation, a bulging disc compressing the nerve, or degenerative arthritic changes such as bony spurs compressing the nerve. The first possibility is more common (but they are part of the same age related degenerative changes of the spine really).

As for what to do, the first step is pain killers and physical therapy. While pain killers alleviate the pain they are not a solution, physical therapy is more important as it helps strengthen the muscles and support the spine.

If symptoms persist over the next weeks an imaging exam is advisable as well to confirm the diagnosis and consider other steps in management like local shots or surgery (but most patients do not need that as they gradually improve by help of physical therapy).

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
