Question: My 7 year old tells me he has been pulling "strings" from him penis occasionally. He saved one and gave it to me and it looks like a long hair. Could it be hair circulating through the air that gets caught up in his system or is it something else?

Brief Answer:
I would recommend ultrasound and urinalysis.

Detailed Answer:
Good day and thank you for being with healthcare magic!!!

Pulling out hair from the penis and urethra (opening where urine comes out) is a very uncommon symptom. Hair from the air wouldn't go inside the urethra on its own and I find that very very unlikely.

How long is the hair that was pulled out? Was it a one time occurrence or it happened several times?

We have cases where kids stick/push things inside the penis for some unknown reasons (curiosity etc. ) and surprises us everyday in our practice.

I would recommend doing an ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder to rule out masses inside the urinary tract that produces hair. (e.g teratoma) It may also be a long streak of blood clot that may look like hair after the clot has fibrosed inside the bladder. Foreign body in the bladder can also be seen via ultrasound.

Blood in the urinary tract is also an abnormality that must be looked at. I recommend having a urinalysis also since a normal urinalysis would rule out infection and inflammation of the kidneys and urinary bladder.

I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily.
