Question: Hello. I just had lab work done and my protein levels in by blood came back at 72. Is this dangerous? Do I have a reason to be concerned? What would cause this?

Brief Answer:
decreased fluid intake

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes, the change in gender from male to female is noted.

The total protein is mainly a combination of albumin and globulin which are types of protein found in the body.

The lab range can vary slightly from lab to lab. In the lab that would have processed your results, your value may be outside the normal range- the range would be stated on the form.
Normally however the range is 6.3 to 7.9 g/dl or 63 to 79 g/l (it depends on the units used).

Using these values, your results would be considered normal.

If according to the lab used, the results are high then the possible causes of a slightly increased total protein are inadequate fluid intake or dehydration.
Very high values can be seen certain blood tumors such as multiple myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia (in these conditions the values are very high)

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you. The dr. did call me and and say my protein levels were "alarmingly" high. I see my dr. next week. What would your course of action be given these results. Would I have other symptoms of something more serious other than high protein levels. What questions should I be asking my dr.?

Brief Answer:
further blood tests

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the delayed reply

The next course of action would be further blood work to determine the cause. This would normally involve a full blood count , ESR (an marker for inflammation in the body) and serum protein electrophoresis (this checks for globulins and is used to determine if a person has multiple myeloma or other types of blood cancers).

Urinary protein may also be assessed.

The symptoms experienced with conditions can vary from one person to the other but many usually experience loss of appetite, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats.
In multiple myeloma there is often a history of back pain.

In terms of questions: you may want to know if any other aspects of your blood tests were abnormal
Any likely diagnosis based on your medical history and symptoms that you may have at the present
Timeframe for additional testing
Any referral consultations needed (for eg,if further tests point to any blood related conditions would need referral to a hematogist.)

Please feel free to ask any additional questions
