What Does Purplish Ring Around Stoma Opening Indicate?
Question: Last week I was seen by my ID doctor for weird symptoms of a purple color in my night ileal conduit drainage bag. I have a follow up appointment this week to figure out what to do and how to treat this. Since then though, I have developed a purplish colored ring around my stoma opening and have had issues of diarrhea. Should I be concerned and heading to the doctor prior to my appointment on Wednesday. The stoma opening is very tiny and telescopes inward. It doesn't sit at or above the skin level. It's been this way for years and the urologist wasn't worried about it as long as it was draining. What is the best thing to do here?
Brief Answer:
If the illeostomy is functioning then there is no cause for concern

Dear Ms
The purplish discolouration is likely to be due to congestion of stoma, due to narrowing of opening of stoma and retraction of stoma. Exact assessment is possible after clinical examination. Providing clinical photograph will be helpful.
As long as stoma is functioning well and mucosa of illeostomy is pink in colour , there is no cause for concern.
Do send me clinical photograph for further assessment.
