What Does The MRI Test Results Indicate?
Question: I had an MRI done without contrast for hip pain. There were many impressions and I am not sure what it all means.
1. Moderate to severe right femoral acetabular degenerative osteoarthritis with joint space narrowing, increased hip effusion accompanied by subchondral degenerative changes to the right supraacetabular iliac bone in the form of dubchondral cystic formation and degenerative change.
2. Cartilaginous loss, degenerative change and what appears to be degenerative tearing to the cartilaginous labrum.
3. Reactive microtrabcular marrow change and subchondral findings to the right femoral head and right femoral neck.
4.Minimal degenerative narrowing to the left femoral acetabular joint.

What is the suggested conservative and aggressive treatment?

The MRI findings are suggestive of age related changes in the hip joint due to wear and tear and decreased lubrication. It has caused thinning of the subchondral bone causing the cyst to form, The cartilage- cushion of the joint has become thinned and mildly torn due to wear and tear.
Due to the inflammation there is a mild fluid collection also in the joint. This is responsible for the pain and restricted joint movement.
The main treatment is medicines like pain killers and muscle relaxants with calcium and joint lubricant supplements. In severe cases intra articular injections of steroids and hyaluronic acid may be needed after consultation with your orthopaedician. In case the pain is not controlled with medicines and physical therapy, then surgical treatment like hip replacement is considered.
