What Does The Blood Test Report Indicate?

Question: Hi

I am so very worried I have cancer, in particular leukemia. I am a mess right now. Can you please help and tell me what the chances are that I have leukemia.

I went to the doctor last week because of a feeling of fullness under the lower part of my left ribs.

He ordered an ultrasound, Complete Blood Count, and chest and abdominal xrays.

The report came back. It says I have borderline splenomegaly (measuring 12.9 cm in length).

The blood work came back I also have low platelets - result- 122- range 145-400 x 10E 9/L

The blood work also shows I have low WBC- result - 3.7 - range 4.0 - 11.0 x 10E/9L

My RBC was 4.69 - range 4.20 - 5.70 x 10E12/L

My MPV was 11.1 - range 7.4 - 11.3 fl

I have done blood work in the past that have also said I had low platelets (132 - on XXXXXXX 14, 2014). My platelets have been low since 2012 - they were normal in 2011.

On my blood test in 2014, There is a test I haven't seen on my other blood tests - it says RBC's appear - and the answer is normocytic, normochromic

and another test states. PLT's appear - adequate.

My red cell count in 2014 was 4.98.
I am a vegetarian which I hear my lower WBC and platelets.
What do you think of my results? Please I am so worried.

Brief Answer:
results do not indicate leukemia

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Cancer is diagnosed when a particular aspect of the body is growing at an abnormal or increased rate.

In leukemia, this is the white blood cells that are too high and therefore suppressing the rest of the bone marrow from making red blood cells and platelets.

Because the white blood cells are growing at increased rapid rate- they are very very high in leukemia.
This means that your white blood cell count would be high---not low.
It would be not be slightly increased in leukemia, there would be a very large increase.

The platelets (PLT) and the hemoglobin count would be very low as well, there would not be a marginal change.
Eg the PLT would likely be less than 100, yours is adequate , meaning it is fine.
It is not abnormal for the PLT to be slightly out of range.

The normal RBC count is 4.7 to 6.1 though this can vary slightly from one lab to the next, yours is within normal.

Normocytic normochromic means that the red blood cells are essentially normal size and 'color or intensity'.

Summary: (1)leukemia associated with overgrowth of white blood cells so they would be very very high not low
(2)leukemia would also cause a very sharp decrease in platelets (plt) and red blood cells
(3)both your red blood cells and platelets are fine

Based on the above you definitely do not have leukemia

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Do you know why my spleen is 12.9 cm and bulky? Should I be really worried?

Brief Answer:
different possible causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Though the average size of the spleen in adults is 11cm, it can actually range up to 15 cm in some persons.
This means that though the size is above the average, it is still with possible upper limits.

Enlargement of the spleen may be due to different causes such as infiltrative disease (eg sarcoidosis), liver failure or heart failure, lymphomas or leukemias (your blood tests do not indicate these), trauma, cysts, metastatic cancer.

An ultrasound would indicate if there were any cysts or any lesions in the spleen, if they were none, then this is also ruled out.

Since your blood tests do not indicate the presence of any cancer, the ultrasound ruled out any masses, it is likely just above the average but if you wish to make sure you can have bloods for inflammatory markers.

Inflammatory markers go up if there is any inflammation in the body due to any cause eg cancer, autoimmune disease etc

ESR and c reactive protein are inflammatory markers.

If you've had one or more of these done and they were normal then this means that no serious problem is present at the moment.

Thank you very much. Thank you...
So just to confirm...would lymphomas of the spleen show up on my blood work or ultrasound?

Brief Answer:
would cause high white cell count

Detailed Answer:
HI

yes, lymphomas would also cause an very high increase in white blood cells and also cause changes on imaging.
