What Does The Brain MRI Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: I had a brain MRI to rule out MS. The report says no evidence for demyelinating disease. But there are "2-3 punctate foci of T2 prolongation in the white matter tracts of the cerebral hemispheres a nonspecific finding." What is the potential significance of this? I am 56 years old with a 3-year history of high cholesterol and overweight, but am not hypertensive.

Brief Answer:
Possibly ischemic lesions

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your clinical details and MRI brain findings.

I agree that these findings on MRI brain are not suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Tiny small lesions like these are most commonly seen with migraine and ischemia (lack of blood flow to brain). Since, you have not mentioned any history of migraine, the other possibility-ischemia- is more likely.

Both high cholesterol as well as overweight could be potential risk factors for these ischemic lesions.

Since these lesions are very tiny, there is no need to worry. Reducing cholesterol levels and weight reduction should be enough at this stage.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
