What Does The Following CT Scan Result Indicate?
Question: My son failed his kindergarten hearing test. We saw a doctor who had him get a CT scan. The results show that everything is clear and looks good except for External auditory canal: Benign plaque-like calcification. Can you tell me what this means and what our next steps should be?
Brief Answer:
Suggestionson tympanosclerosis
Detailed Answer:
Hi...by what you quote I feel that your son is is having Tympanosclerosis.
Tympanosclerosis, stiffening of the tympanic membrane due to calcification, typically presents as white plaque-like lesions, involving discrete regions of the tympanic membrane and/or middle ear.
Sometimes it can cause hearing loss....can result in a mild conductive hearing loss.
We can go ahead with biopsy and histopathological examination.
Most patients require no treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
1. First we need to take a biopsy of the plaque and subject it to histopathological examination.
2. Based on the histopathology finding we need to decide whether treatment or other excision is required or not.
These are the steps which are to be taken up further.
