Question: My dad has been recently hospitilased. I jus wanted to have a second opinion on this one. He was having pain in his back since 25days. He did lot of bending, when pain increased he took pain killer injection and medicines. It gave him some relief but still pain carried on. When he took some rest it was fine when he did more of excursion then pain used to come again.7days back he drove almost 500 kms, then some work which involved standing for almost 4 hours which increased his pain. And then there s 6-7 year old kid at home, he picked him up and he felt a jerk at the time and his pain increased so much that we had to hospitalize him. Now he is not able to stand or sit.Doctors put him on pain killers. He has started feeling better but pain is still there. Please advise medication and check reports. And let me know whats best.

Brief Answer:
MRI report is not thre.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your father's symptoms and we need to exclude compression of nerves in the lower back (lumbar region) due to bulging of discs at L4-5 and L5-S1 levels.

We can not see the MRI report. Please re-attach it.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

I want you to review the reports and tell me about medication to be followed. Advise what to be done and not. Will physiotherapy help?

Brief Answer:
Medical treatment and physiotherapy would help.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for sending the reports.

I have seen the MRI reports and the doctor's notes.

At present medical treatment would help.
Gabapentin is a good choice. For my patients, I usually prescribe a dose of 300 mg two times daily.

Physiotherapy is also useful- interferential therapy and ultrasound for pain relief, and back extension exercises.

He should avoid lifting heavy weights and also forward bending should be avoided.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
