Posted on Mon, 20 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, i had a recent mri scan on my head as i mentioned to the doctor that I appeared to be suffering with choosing the right words in conversations and forgetting things. I felt not as intelligent and find my mind wanders and hatd to concentrate for periods on things. Neurologist said scan was ok.

So im not sure what could be wrong. Other aymptoms i mentioned were eye issues where my eyesight sometimes goes funny for short periods and i get eye twitching in left eye a lot often wake up with it. I sometimes get other face twitching and around the lips.

Im 39. Im concerned as i used to find communicating effortless and woukd say i was very articulate so now to be struggling i am unsure what could be the cause.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

The fact that the MRI scan was fine is very good, it reassures us that there is no life threatening condition like tumor, inflammation etc.

Now considering your age which is too early to think about developing cognitive issues I would say from daily practice that those types of issues are more often related to stress and anxiety. They do affect concentration and make retaining information more difficult creating the erroneous impression there is a memory impairment.
However, if you think that is not the case, in order to determine whether there is really a cognitive impairment there are neuropsychological tests in place, objective tests which test cognitive functions, sort of questionnaires evaluating different fields of cognition.
They are more appropriate than MRI to determine whether there is cognitive impairment, MRI can result normal even when there is impairment, it is done to determine whether there is a brain lesion at the origin, not to make the diagnosis.

So discuss that with the neurologist, many tests available, he can administer more simple tests himself or send you to a neuropsychologist for more in depth testing. If the tests come back normal I would agree with your neurologist that there is nothing wrong and consider it being due to stress and anxiety.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.

Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
First steps should be simple ones like exercise and activities like yoga, avoid/reduce caffeine and other stimulants, regular eating and sleeping hours, take things easy and with a positive attitude.

There is also medication but I would try to avoid that unless really necessary.

I hope to have been of help.
