Question: Grandson has a bony protuberance on anterior of lower shin bone, about 2 cm across and sticks out about 1 cm. No pain and is attached to the bone
Brief Answer:
X-ray of the bone
Detailed Answer:
Hi
thanks for query.
I need few details besides an x-ray of the bone ( tibia).
how long do you see this?
was it all of a sudden or gradual?
any injuries or falls after which this appeared?
does it pain or tender?
is it moving vertically or horizontally over the underlying bade?
it can arise from muscles, bone or overlying skin tissue.
it is better to get preliminary x-ray to understand the nature of it.

Plays football, doesn't remember any injury. Just discovered two days ago, no pain and firmly attached to the bone.
Brief Answer:
Shin splints/Bone cyst/chondro fibroma
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Your grand son may have one of the following possibilities
Osgood schattler- there is a tubercle on the anterior shin bone, called shin splints. However they are slightly painful. It sometimes swells in athletes and sport person. Very benign condition and does not require treatment. Children will outgrow this.
Chondro fibroma is a kind of tumor from the marrow cavity of the long bones. It needs investigation
Bone cyst is simple and can be a reason.
Please see an Orthopedic surgeon for firm diagnosis.
