What Does The Following Lipid Profile Result Suggest?
I am a XXXXXXX Male, 33 Years, 166 cm and 89 Kgs. I have done my lipid Profile recently and found out the following.
Total Cholesterol: 231.99
Triglycerides: 111.39
HDL Cholesterol: 77.28
LDL Cholesterol: 141.11
Vitamin D: 19.90
My GP has told me to take "LIPITOR 20mg ATORVASTATIN" daily once for 3 Months and Ergocalciferol once weekly.
My Question:
(1) Is it necessary to take this medicine or life style change is enough.
(2) Do this medicine will be habitual and i will end up in using the medicine for lifelong.
(3) I am using Vitabiotics Cardioace original, one capsule daily since last one week. Can i continue the same with Lipitor or either one will be fine.
Thanks and Best Regards,
XXXX
You need to define your coronary risk profile.
Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thank you for your question on HCM! I want to explain to you that before geting to drug treatment for high lipid profile disorder the doctor should define the patient risk profile for future coronary (heart) events based on the number of coronary risk factors present. As you don't refer for other risk factors like high BP, diabetes, cigarette smoking, no heredity for coronary disease, then you are at very low risk for coronary disease and according to this I recommend:
(1) You shoud try for three months with only diet modification (Mediterranean diet is recommended) abd lifestyle changes (increase physical activity, arrange sleeping, avoid unfavourable habitus). If after three months, the fasting lipid profile is unfavorable then you have to switch to drugs like Atorvastatin.
(2) Regarding the duration of Atorvastatin use it sill dependent on the results of diet and lifestyle modifications (don't forget body weight lowering, it is very important). If you have a confirmed familiar dyslipidemia then for sure the treatment will be lifelong. But even if you will need to take Atorvastatin continuously I would like to assure you that generally it hase a safe profile pharmacology.
(3) As I explained above current opinions are in favor of diet and lifestyle modifications for 3 months, if the problem persists then Atorvastatin. If Vitabiotics Cardioace is recommended by a specialist to treat other disorder I don't have any objections about it. But regarding lipid disorders I recommend you to follow the current Guidelines opinion I explained.
Hope to have been helpful to you!
Feel free to ask me whenever you need ! Greetings from Dr. Iliri
as far as risk factor is as follows...
BP- 143/83
Diabetes- No
Cigarette Smoking- No
Alcohol- Heavy Drinker
Heredity- father cholesterol at 220 and mother cholesterol is at 280
kindly advice if I can use atrovastatin for only one month and then I will stop.
Try first diet and lifestyle modifications.
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX! I read your risk factors prescription; also lipid profile and other exams performed recently. You result in the insignificant risk profile level for corobary events. You have to know that hyperlipidemia is considered dangerous when the body is exposed for a long time (years) to its harmful effects. So it would be worthy and wise, and totally in accordance with the current medical guidelines and also practical common senses to try first diet and lifestyle modification for three months; stop alcohol abuse; fight body overweight. I think that all these measures will result successful.
Nevertheless, only if fasting lipid profile will remain unfavourable, we have to start Atorvastatin.
