What Does The Following Ultrasound Report Indicate?
Question: When i went to have an ultra sound for my heart the cardiologist told me that my thyroid gland looks a bit rough in texture. He didn't mention any cysts or lumps. He just said 'rough texture'. I did all the thyroid blood tests and all came back normal. Is rough texture something that i have to keep an eye on?
Brief Answer:
About thyroid autoimmune pathologies:
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking !
Rough thyroid texture is suggestive for autoimmune pathology of the thyroid gland.
In early phases the thyroid function is normal, but if the autoimmune process is confirmed ( by checking the antithyroid antibodies), you should be under close monitoring of the thyroid function ( once in 6 months).
There is no treatment to prevent a further ''damage'' of the gland.
Once the thyroid function is altered, treatment should be started to restore it.
As far as the hormonal level is within the normal ranges, no symptoms are expected.
Hope i have been helpful. Feel free to ask further.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
