What Does This CT Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: I was in the emergency room for a kidney stone this afternoon. I was in extreme pain and given dilaudid. I felt better but could still feel some pain. The CT scan showed swelling in left kidney but no stone could be seen A couple hours later the pain completely subsided. I had to leave a urine sample and I noticed a dark colored thing in the toilet. Could this be the kidney stone? At this time I felt no pain. Wouldn't this cause pain when I was urinating? I am home now and feel a little soreness where I had the pain and I am nervous the extreme pain will return. The ER Doctor said some stones cannot be detected on a CT scan

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query  and understand your concern.
Although CT scan is one if the best method to scan kidney stones ,even better than ultrasound but very small stones can be missed by CT as rightly said by the doctor at ER.
Your history of passage of some stone like thing  in urine Along with immediate settling of pain does suggest that you really had stone which got passed out.
I hope pain doesn't re occur but it can not be said with surety whether you passed the fragment of stone or the entire stone. May be there are other very small stones also.
Fact is that we can not predict about the re occurence of pain.
Take plenty of water to keep flushing your kidney.
Passage of large amount of urine helps in decreasing the chances of fresh formation of stones.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks

This is a follow up question to my kidney stone episode. I have soreness in my back and I have been urinating quite frequently. I also have soreness in my lower abdomen. I was prescribed .4 mg of Tamsulosin to take for a few days. Could this be causing my symptoms? Although I am not in extreme pain as when I went to the ER, I am not feeling very well. I passed the kidney stone 2 days ago.

Hello,
Your symptoms suggest urine infection or a possible kidney infection ( pyelonephritis
If infection is present, you would need a course of antibiotics.
This infection can be easily seen in your urinalysis.
Since you have already given the urine sample for testing, kindly enquire about it.
Tamsulosin is not causing these symptoms.
Thanks
