What Does This EEG Report For Head Injury In Children Indicate?
Question: Hi, My daughter had a head injury 2.5 years ago and I have been trying to get her help in my country. her personality has changed her IQ has dropped 40 points, She is now diagnosed with Dyslexia, dysgraphia and Dyscalcula. She had dyspraxia prior to the accident but it did not affect her daily living too much.
She has had 2 EEG s both showed abnormality. She had a telemetry study done 4 months ago and I have just received the results today. No follow up appointment has been arranged.
She is having absenses and can often forget many things. She has laughing episodes which happen sporadically. She can get confused also.
I would appreciate if you could explain to me does the EEG show that there is an acquired brain injury due to the frontal lobe spikes and what are reasons for the abnormal eeg results and should she be on medication to stabilize her. Her OT will not continue her treatment until she is on a stable neurological platform so I am keen to get help for her and will now have to travel overseas for help.

Hi, I had gone through the problem and looked into the details mentioned. It looks like she already had symptoms of frontal lobe in the form of dyspraxia before the head injury. Drop in the IQ and change of personality after head injury may indicate further involvement of the frontal lobe and temporal lobe. CT or an MRI of the brain can indicate if head injury has caused contusions in these parts of the brain.
Regarding the EEG and telemetry reports I personally feel she has frontal epilepsy manifesting as absence like spells, laughter (gelastic seizures) and confusions. She needs to be on medications to control the seizures. She also needs an MRI of the brain to look for cause of seizures. Once her neurological condition is stable she can be initiated on OT, speech and behavioral therapy.
So I personally feel you need to see a pediatric neurologist or pediatric epileptologist for initiation of medications for seizures and detailed evaluation for the cause of seizures. At this point it looks more of an acquired illness than a genetic disorder.
