What Does This MRI Report Indicate?
I am a U.S. Army service member and I have been told by Army Orthopedic Surgeons that I have Patellar cartilage damage in my left knee. She told me that the damage is not enough for surgery and the Army will not do surgery. However, it hurts my left knee when going up and down stairs, going up or down an incline grade and running. I recently visited my primary doctor today and he said that he saw in the MRI notes that I had "Chondral Fissuring" under the kneecap. He said that my femur bone rubs up against the kneecap underneath causing the pain that I have. He said that I could face an Army Medical Evaluation Board and put out of the Army for that and be medically retired. I believe some Army doctors and Army Orthopedic surgeons are giving me the run-around.
My question is, how soon is surgery needed to repair the damage, 5 years from now? 10 years?

Depends on the level of activity.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The chondral fissuring under the knee cap can extend earlier if there is an extensive activity involving the knee. The further deterioration depends on the level of your activity. It may need a repair in next 5 years if there is a persistent pain. To decrease the pain you can start with joint lubricant supplements, do a hot fomentation and use an elastic knee brace to give support to the knee.
I hope this answers your query.
