Question: I had a middle fossa cranitomy to repair a csf leak of the temproal bone and encephalocele that protruded through the defect, my recent mri states. small zone of chronic encephalomalacia along the inferior aspect adjacent to cranial mesh plate is noted. what could have caused this. I only got this after surgery. they put no lumbar drain in despite my history of elevated icp and im not shunted. I developed very serious symptoms right after surgery. Could this be a result of untreated brain swelling or reaction tot he titanium plate

Brief Answer:
More information needed about your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Encephalomalatia is a common finding in brain structures around and adjacent to surgery site in cases of brain surgery.

Reaction to titanium plate is very unlikely to happen, but still exists as a possibility.

It is important to explain your symptoms first, temporal lobe malacia could be related to seizures or hearing disturbances, increased intracranial pressure instead causes headaches, vomiting, unsteady gait, lethargy, urination problems.

If increased ICP diagnosis is correct, it should be treated.

Hope this helps.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.

Hi, have problem with laying down, if i lay on my back, i get very bad rotational vertigo. have speech issues and very bad short term memory loss and a head tilt problem, head falls to right side. at 12 weeks post op i noticed mastoid is caved in. Dr said it would fill in, but i think they drilled out entire mastoid bone. not sure if its related to my symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Probably middle and inner ear dysfunction.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Those symptoms seem to be more related to middle and inner ear dysfunction, than to be related to increased intracranial pressure, so, first there is need to consult an ENT Doctor to evaluate further this possibility as a cause of your symptoms.

Hope I helped you.

Greetings.
