What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

Question: Hello Doctor,

We did a MRI Brain with Angio for my mother, now we have got a preliminary report, the final report we'll get by tomorrow. The preliminary report says the following "Acute non haemorrhagic infarct noted in the right side of the pons. It reveals restricted diffusion. MRA does not reveal carotid or basilar stenosis.
Mucosal thickening noted in bilateral ethmoid, frontal and spenoid sinuses." To give a background, my mother last tuesday i.e. on 1st March 2016 complained of a weak left hand and leg and she was unable to balance properly while walking to the washroom early in the morning. Later we went to the physician who suspecting a paralytic stroke recommended to be hospitalized and do a CT Scan. The CT Scan report was shown to a Neurophysician who then recommended to do a MRA. The preliminary report finding I've mentioned above. My mother says compared to last week she is slightly better and she is walking on her own but with a limp though, the left hand is also relatively weaker compared to the right hand. I wanted to understand the report findings and also how much time it may take for a full recovery if possible?

Exact time limit can't be defined.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I have gone through the comprehensive clinical details of your mother's illness,as well as the priliminary MRI report uploaded by you.

There is an acute infarct in right pons which very well explain the left side weakness along with balance problem. Fibre tracts are crossed in brain,so right side lesion in pons is affecting left side of the body.

Infarct means damage to a part of brain due to lack of blood perfusion. It usually happens due to a blockage by clot in the supplying artery.Quite often, fragile vessels of infarct may bleed which is not the case here, however as it is a non-haemorrhagic infarct.

It may take days to weeks to months to even upto an year for maximum recovery.Often, recovery may not be 100 percent and some residual weakness may be left back. However,in your mother's case chances of recovery appear to be good as significant recovery has already taken place. She may go on recovering for months. It is a gradual process.

Hope that helps. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.
