What Does This MRI Report Indicate?
Here is what it said: apparent circumferential thickening in the mid rectum. May be related to contractions. Colonoscopy suggested to exclude any underlying mucosal lesions. Otherwise unremarkable findings of pelvic MR.
Question: can you interpet what this means. What are the likely causes? Is there a good chance that it may be cancer? I had a colonoscopy in Nov 2013 which came back normal.
No dimensions of thickening was provided.
I am attaching the full report. It is important to also note that I had a Pelvic MRI in mid November that came back normal. Here are both reports.
I also have the MR images. If helpful, I can send them too
MRI shows Mid Rectum Bowel Thickening. Need further evaluation.
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
thank you for posting query at HCM.
noted that you received your MRI reports which show thickening in the midrectum area of large bowel.
differentials for the finding include: inflammation, benign lesion, neoplasm, infection,or ischemic condition.
Risk Factors for malignancy include:
1. focal lesion
2. irregular lesion
3. NO or minimum fat srtranding
4. asymmetric, heterogenous
5. positive family history
6. history of rectal bleeding
7. positive history inflammatory bowel disease
if there is a "NO" through points 4 to 7, risk for malignancy is low.
points 1 to 4 requires colonoscopic examination +/- biopsy and negative results will rule out malignancy (cancer).
